Lupus Fugiens, Venator et Pastor (Gildersleeve)

SOURCE: A Latin Reader by Basil Lanneau Gildersleeve. For more information and other versions, see the links list for Perry 22. This is a story told with a variety of different animals who are on the run - sometimes a rabbit, sometimes a fox, and sometimes a wolf, as here.

READ OUT LOUD. Choose which marked text you prefer to practice with - macrons or accent marks - and read the text out loud until you feel comfortable and confident. Then, try reading the unmarked text at the bottom. It should be easy for you after practicing with the marked texts. :-)

MACRONS. Here is the text with macrons:

Cum vēnātōrem instantem fugere lupus et pastor vīdisset quīdam, quā parte fugeret et quō sē locō absconderet, ille vehementer metuens: Ōrō tē, inquit, bubulce, nē mē prōdās innocentem. Nihil umquam malī tibi fēcī. Et pastor: Nōlī, inquit, timēre; alteram vēnātōri monstrābō partem. Mox vēnātor cum advolasset: Vidistīne hūc, inquit, pastor, lupum venientem? Quā parte fūgit? Huīc pastor vōce maximā: Vēnit ille quidem, sed laevā fūgit. At simul oculīs clam dextram partem dēsīgnat. Vēnātor nōn intellexit nūtum et festīnans abiit. Tum lupum pastor interrogat: Quam tu mihi habēbis grātiam, quod tē celāvī? Tum ille, Maximās, inquit, linguae tuae grātiās agō; at oculīs tuīs fallācibus, sēcum murmurans subiēcit, tālem grātiam referam, ut ex minōre in diēs ovium numerō cōgnōscās quam memor sim meritī tuī!

UNMARKED TEXT. Here is the unmarked text - after practicing with the marked text that you prefer, you should not have any trouble with the unmarked text:

Cum venatorem instantem fugere lupus et pastor vidisset quidam, qua parte fugeret et quo se loco absconderet, ille vehementer metuens: Oro te, inquit, bubulce, ne me prodas innocentem. Nihil umquam mali tibi feci. Et pastor: Noli, inquit, timere; alteram venatori monstrabo partem. Mox venator cum advolasset: Vidistine huc, inquit, pastor, lupum venientem? Qua parte fugit? Tum lupum pastor interrogat: Quam tu mihi habebis gratiam, quod te celavi? Tum ille, Maximas, inquit, linguae tuae gratias ago; at oculis tuis fallacibus, secum murmurans subiecit, talem gratiam referam, ut ex minore in dies ovium numero cognoscas - quam memor sim meriti tui!
